My child was diagnosed @ the age of 7. I just wrote if off as the only child syndrome. or bratty child. she is 11 and is still giving me hell. 3 schools later and she is still acting like a 5 year old with the temper tandrums and never follow my or the teacher rules. My mother blames me because i should of been more firm with her. We will have another in take next week to reevaluate her since she was diagnosed over 2 years ago,so the new school would like to help with handling her when she has these "out burst" that disrupts the class. I ask her why does she does these things and she flatted out stated that she can not help it and she was crying. My mother said she just need a good swift kick in the butt. but that is not always the case. I just feel like i can not stand her sometimes and what did i do. I did not miss any prenatal appointments i did everything right. Then i looked at her dads history and the apple did not fall far from that tree. I am praying she overcomes this because i have plans for her, i mean she would be a great lawyer with the arguments she gives but i really hope that she does outgrow it or battle it. I am willing to do whatever it takes to help her. I really don't want to medicate her but i am glad that that's not really a option for this disorder but i will keep on praying for my daughter.

Sheryl, I feel i am NOT ALONE.. i have been taking my son Elias to the dr. and he got scanned at 21/2 and 4. they found nothing! At five they are trying to put him a behavorial outpatient clinic which i am open to . elias needs help and all the examples you showed on ODD is right on target!! I am waiting for an appt for an intake for him. he is only 5 he is bright and his behaviour is holding him back. We have punished him and taken away stuff. Nothing!! he loves to talk and gets along with people but when we leave and he is so buddy buddy with a kid, he acts up becaue he doesn't want to leave which is un derstable to us but not him. He has gotten sooo out fo hand and i am running ragged. I hope this cacn be helped becaue he is going to enter 1st grade and i want him to succeed, and not be an annoyance. As of now he is in special ed. In whihc his teacher god bless her had done so much for him, and he acts out in class authority he has just not listenend to. He won't do his work in school so at home he ahs to do it! Then the old time word of his now is "BORING" school is boring- cartoons re boring. And yet he has taken in his min everyday before going on taht bus, that he will misbehave! I am so surprised at him and the way he is going! His older brother was never like this. i pray that this is what he has becuase it sound just like my 5 yr. old!!

Bipolar Disorder must be very hard. A second opinion certainly wouldn't hurt. Do you have a good health professional e.g. psychiatrist? That would be the first thing that I would do, find yourself a good psychiatrist that will build a good relationship with your son and will be able to give him the help he needs.

All the best
