PostHeaderIcon Welcome To ‘My Beautiful Boy’ Blog

My name is Sheryl, I am married To Derek and we have three beautiful boys, Ben, Corey and Lachlan.  The big photo above is Lachlan on the left, Ben in the middle and Corey on the right.

We have lots of behavioural issues with Corey and I am at the stage where I can’t deal with it any longer.  I guess that is part of the reason that I started this blog so I can sit here and let out my frustrations by writing them down.  Hopefully I will be able to get Corey to write his thoughts on here too.

Corey is the perfect angel at school and with other people and at home he is a completely different person so nobody really believes me when I talk about the trouble that we have with him, which makes it even more frustration.  He is like Jekyl and Hyde.

We have one smashed window, numerous holes in the walls, dents in the car doors and much more and these things are all as a result of Corey being unable to control his emotions.  He is very emotional and will fly into a tantrum at the drop of a hat.  Poor Ben usually bears the brunt of it all however Ben does tease Corey a lot which doesn’t help matters much.

I have had a school counsellor suggest to have him checked for Aspergers syndrome however whenever I mention it to a doctor they kind of brush it off. I really don’t know if he has that, sometimes I think he does and other times I don’t.  I really don’t know enough about it.

Corey is very intelligent but very behind emotionally and socially.  We tried to get help through the school system but that didn’t really get us anywhere. We were referred to a psycologist by our GP who didn’t really help either, he barely spoke to Corey and basically just told me I need to manage his behaviour more effectively and would tell me to give him more consequences for his behaviors.  That is easy for him to say, he doesn’t have to bear the brunt of Corey’s rage when you attempt to give him consequences.

I wasn’t going to stop there though, he wasn’t helping so I went back to our GP and she has now referred us to a child psyciatrist and we had our first visit there last week.  He does seem very good and spent some one on one time with Corey so I really am hoping that he will be able to help us out here as I just don’t know how much longer I can deal with this.

I spend almost every day in tears including today where I have just sat here all day crying. Corey is home from school today because he flat out refused to go.  He has done the whole crying in the morning at school for about 3 years now but I always made him go and never gave in, however now he is 8 he is getting too big and too strong for me to physcially force him to go and to be honest I just don’t have the energy anymore.

Corey can be such a good boy when he want’s go be, unfortunately he doesn’t want to be very often - at least not at home.  My GP also suggested putting him on a diet to avoid preservatives so we may give that a go too.

Well, thanks for reading, hope to see you back here again.
Take care
Sheryl

Hi Sheryl, Have you read the book–”The Strong Willed Child” by Dr. James Dobson? He’s the guy who started Focus on the Family. This book might help. Just a suggestion. God bless.
